Our Ministry

In 2011, Kara Denton Méndez started Tapestry of Love Ministries in Guatemala as a part of a college internship. The ministry began as a preschool with 14 students. After graduating, Kara felt God calling her to move from Granite City, Illinois to Guatemala and continue the ministry. Year after year, God has continued to exponentially grow Mount Sinai Christian School and Tapestry of Love Ministries.
One of the main ways that TOLM ministers to the community is through Mount Sinai Christian School (MSCS). We currently have over a hundred students ranging from preschool through eleventh grade. We have seven teachers and three school assistants. Beyond the basic subjects such as math, literature, science, and history, our students are able to learn about art, music, computers, writing, Bible and more.
Our desire is to build bridges to connect to the local people through the church and the school. We want to see the community transformed, come to know Jesus, and have a personal relationship with Him. We have three core Love Sponsorship Programs to support us in our mission: Child Sponsorship Program, Teacher Sponsorship Program, and Missionary Sponsorship Program. We engage in multiple community outreaches including giving food baskets, home visits, and the building of houses, chicken coups, and pig corrals.
TOLM serves the community of Magdalena in partnership with the local church, Mount Sinai Evangelical Mission Church. This means that as our missionaries are ministering to the community, they have a church body that supports them and they can connect those they encounter with people who love Jesus and who gather together. As we partner together, we support the church in its mission and projects including evangelism, hosting medical clinics, and church planting. The church accordingly supports us in our work and with our programs, our ministry in the community, and our work in other public schools.
TOLM became an a 501c-3, independent nonprofit, in 2017. As we continue to grow, we are looking to expand the school and ministry base so that we can serve Magdalena, surrounding communities, and all of Guatemala through new outreaches and projects. God has given us a vision for an afterschool tutoring program for public students, a medical clinic, adult literacy classes, a community sports program, and much more.
