Inspiration

Kara Denton went on a three-week mission trip to Guatemala. On that trip, Kara learned about life overseas and what the face of poverty looked like. God instilled in her a deep love for the people of the country and gave her a vision of helping the children through education.

Beginning

In 2011, Kara was a senior at Greenville college. God called Kara to complete a ministry internship in Magdalena, Guatemala during her spring semester. God opened many doors and with the partnership of a local church, Mount Sinai Evangelical Mission Church, Kara started Mount Sinai Christian School. The school began as a preschool. After she graduated that May, Kara moved to Guatemala, starting Tapestry of Love Ministries. Mount Sinai Christian School (MSCS) finished its first year with 14 preschoolers. Kara also married her husband Mario, a pastor and teacher, who serves as a missionary alongside her.

Our missionaries began working with the youth group at Mount Sinai Evangelical Mission Church. The ministry also completed its first community service project by helping with construction on a local home. Our first individuals came to serve in Guatemala.

Unexpected

2020 was a year of unexpected hardship, pain, and sadness. Due to COVID-19, the country of Guatemala went on lockdown, countless Guatemalans lost their jobs, people were starving, and families were placing white flags outside their homes as a symbol they had nothing left. As a ministry, we trusted God and changed how we operated. Our teachers adapted and became creative as school went virtual. We were able to give out over 100 food baskets. Construction also began on the Ministry Expansion Project.

Real Faith

In 2021, it was the second year of the pandemic and COVID-19 was spreading throughout the beautiful country. We continued to serve children and families in rural Guatemala. The students of MSCS began to attend school in a hybrid format, both virtually and and in-person through a block schedule. In the midst of the unknown, we placed our faith in the Lord, trusting Him to open doors to better serve the people of Guatemala.

One Hope

Our students finally returned to in-person school in 2022. Partnering with Mount Sinai Evangelical Mission Church, we started a nutrition program for children in Chirijcruz, one of the communities where a church had been planted. We also hosted our first mission team since the pandemic had begun. As a ministry, we experienced moments of great joy, including the completion of chicken coups, and when 9 young people gave their lives to Christ. There were also moments of deep sorrow when two of our students tragically passed away. Despite everything, we focused our eyes on Jesus finding hope in Him and pursuing the vision He had given us of reaching Guatemala for Christ.
